Children’s Yoga – Classes coming soon.

At Harmony Yoga, Natasha believes that yoga for children can have a significant impact on their physical, mental and emotional development. When children engage and learn relaxation techniques, as taught in yoga, it can improve their mental state, which helps them to cope with any stress in a healthy manner. When children are happy and relaxed, it has a positive impact on the quality of their thought patterns leading to an improved sense of well-being and brings positivity to their daily lives.

The psychological benefits for children practising yoga include, improved focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behaviour, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children. Practising yoga and mindfulness encourages children to stay in the present moment, fully aware of their inner state and outer surroundings. They are able to adapt better and react with more compassion and understanding to the world around them. By engaging in meditative practices on a regular basis, children are able to revise their responses and adjust their behaviour.

Physically, the practice of yoga can suit all children, based on a variety of asanas, there are many adjustments and variations that can be offered to make it accessible for all. Children are encouraged to move slowly through the poses, focusing on their breath which improves their sense of balance, strength, flexibility and endurance. The gentle stretches relax the body on a deeper level when combined with the breath and can have a profound effect on the regulation of the nervous system. Learning physical postures helps to build children’s confidence and improve their strength in body and mind.

At Harmony Yoga, Natasha’s Children’s Yoga classes are taught in an environment that is fun, positive and non-competitive, therefore, in contrast to some other sporting activities. This supportive and nurturing environment enables the children to build confidence in their physical body and mind with no expectation of an end result, e.g., a win against an opposing team! This may in fact lead the children to embrace their strength, mentally and physically, and utilise these skills in new activities. Ultimately, setting them up for success.

Natasha’s children’s yoga classes are a safe and caring environment in which they can be gently encouraged to observe any feelings that surface and learn to respond to challenges in a calm manner rather than react in a defensive manner. The children are encouraged to learn how to identify with the physical feelings of stress in the body, then discover how to create space in the mind to acknowledge any sensations, thoughts or emotions in any given moment (without judging, criticising or over-reacting). Natasha aims to help the children explore the senses in the ‘here and now’.

As an experienced classroom teacher for over ten years, teaching music in primary and secondary schools, Natasha has a genuine love of inspiring children to be the best version of themselves and believes there are many parallels between teaching music and teaching children’s yoga. They both allow the children to be creative, self-expressive, and most importantly build their self-esteem and confidence.

The children are always treated with respect as individuals, Natasha aims to instill confidence and build their self-esteem through physical movement, whereby they become more aware of the bodies and how to move them safely – guiding movement with the breath, pranayama and meditation to allow them space to find a sense of calm and release. The children will be unlikely to realise all of this is happening when they attend a yoga class, and many children and parents will believe yoga is about being bendy, flexible and a form of physical exercise. At Harmony Yoga, Natasha hopes that after attending children’s yoga classes the children and parents will start to experience this gentle shift in their behaviour and actions. The joy in teaching yoga to children is immeasurable and Natasha takes pleasure in contributing to her young yogi’s finding happiness, and their place, in what can sometimes be a confusing world.
